The booklet is an accurate and well-written account of the development of Colorado's first mining community. The author was born in Gold Hill in 1885. Her father James Guise was a miner, while her mother, Hannah Spaulding Guise, was the town's first schoolteacher.

A STORY OF GOLD HILL also touches on the people and the social history of the town. Included is a fold-out map of the mountains of the Front Range as viewed from Big Horn Mountain.
