August 19, 2007, Arizona Daily Sun, Flag Residents' Help Needed to ID Murder Victim, by Silvia Pettem
In 1954, a young woman ("Boulder Jane Doe") was murdered near Boulder, Colo. She was never identified, but circumstantial evidence points to Katharine Farrand Dyer, a Flagstaff resident in 1949 and 1950.
In 2004, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office exhumed Jane Doe's remains and profiled her DNA to compare to a family member. If you remember Katharine (or know of her family), we want to hear from you. I'm a Colorado historian working with the Sheriff on this reopened case. The police files are gone, but newspapers from 1954 reported that Katharine (who matched the description) was missing from nearby Denver at the time. Our goal is to return this victim's remains, at no cost, to the family to whom she belongs.
Katharine Farrand was married to Jimmie Dyer in Prescott in September 1949. Jimmie was a student at NAU from 1946 until his graduation in 1950 when the couple moved to Denver. According to the University Registrar's Office, Katharine was listed as his spouse, but she was not a student.
While in Flagstaff, the couple lived at "14A Clark Homes" (990 N. Thorpe Road). Jimmie Dyer's mother Katie Dyer (later Edwards and then Warren) worked at Babbitt's. Jimmie's older half-brothers were William and Emil Scholz. Jimmie's younger half-sister was Emily Edwards (Starr). All lived in the Flagstaff area and are now deceased.
