September 11, 2008 Rocky Mountain News, Murder Victim Returned to Her Grave Without Her Name, by Marilyn Robinson

After 54 years, she remains unidentified, and her killer unknown.

Her nude and battered body was found along Boulder Creek 8 miles west of Boulder on April 8, 1954.

An autopsy showed she died of exposure and complications from multiple fractures.

She was unearthed in 2004 in hopes that technological advances would allow authorities to identify her.

Authorities now believe she may be Katharine Farrand Dyer, who disappeared from her rooming house in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood in March 1954.

But they have been unable to find relatives for a DNA comparison.

Boulder County sheriff's investigators, a chaplain from the sheriff's office and staff from Crist Mortuary, which donated a casket, were on hand Tuesday when Jane Doe was reburied. So was Silvia Pettem, a local historian who has led recent efforts to identify the murder victim.

Pettem placed red gladiolas on the grave - just as was done in 1954 when Jane Doe was buried the first time.

"When I placed Jane Doe's picture (on the casket), I felt a sense of closure," said Pettem "As far as I am concerned, I believe I know who she is."

Sheriff's investigators will continue to try to find Dyer's relatives to confirm the victim's identity, said Sheriff's Cmdr. Phil West.
