February 17, 2004, Boulder Daily Camera, Letter to the Editor: Tragedy, How Sad That Her Name is Unknown, by Carl M. Wright
The Jane Doe case is approaching its 50th anniversary and so far her identity has not been determined ("50-year-old Jane Doe murder still haunts county," front page, Feb. 2).
It's extremely sad that not even her name is known.
Alexander Pope's "Elegy to an Unfortunate Lady" seems befitting of her tragedy:
"By foreign hands your dying eyes were closed.
By foreign hands your comely limbs composed.
By foreign hands your humble grave adorned.
By strangers honored and by strangers mourned."
Contributions to the Jane Doe Fund at the Boulder History Museum to obtain her DNA, a method not available in 1954, will at last provide a chance for her to rest under her own name.
