April 14, 1954 Boulder Daily Camera, Suspects in Local Murder Case Cleared
The first suspects arrested for questioning in connection with the slaying of a girl whose body was found in Boulder cañon last Thursday night were quickly cleared today.
After questioning two airmen at Lowry Air Force Base near Denver, Boulder County Sheriff Arthur T. Everson said: "There's nothing to it whatsoever."
Deputy Police Chief Lee Raedel of Denver said Detective Capt. Fred Zarnow received a telephone call this morning from a man who said: "The men involved in that case are stationed at Lowry."
CALLER NAMES PAIR
The caller then named the men and described their car. The two airmen were arrested and the automobile was seized.
Sheriff Everson and Police Detective Roy Hill went to Lowry AFB to participate in the questioning. Everson reported it was definitely established this afternoon that the two suspects had nothing to do with the case. They were released.
A white dress of the type frequently worn by waitresses or beauty operators was the only new local clue today in eforts to identify the murdered girl.
Deputy Sheriff Wray Andrews found the dress Tuesday afternoon in a bush beside the Boulder cañon road at its junction with the Sugar Loaf road. This was about three miles below the point where the young blonde was dumped over an embankment on the cañon highway.
The dress was made of seersucker with a zipper up the front. It was soiled but in good condition. The dress looked to be too large for the mystery victim who was entirely nude when her body was discovered.
Lacking any other leads, Sheriff Arthur T. Everson said he planned a search of mountain areas today for clothing or other evidence. He had no particular location in mind but planned to inspect the general vicinity of the Boulder cañon-Sugar Loaf junction including the Magnolia district.
The Associated Press relayed to the Camera an inquiry from the East as to whether the murder victim had an oval scar outside the left knee and her hair in bangs. She did not.
Coroner George W. Howe said the victim will not be buried until next week but the body is beyond identification. |
