April 16, 1954 Daily Camera, Slim Lead Starts Second Week of Girl Slaying Probe

Starting the second week of investigation of the murder of an unidentified girl whose body was found in Boulder cañon, the sheriff's office had only one slim new lead today.

It was a report that four young men, two of whom acted suspiciously, rented a hotel room here the night of April 2-3. Sheriff Arthur T. Everson said this tip was one of several with no apparent connection with the murder case but it will be checked as far as possible.

Kansas officers are still probing a possibility that the unidentified young blonde whose nude body was dumped beside Boulder creek was a hitchhiker who identified herself as Mary Jane Smith, 19, of route one, Lenexa, Kan. The town is a suburb of Kansas City, Kan.

Police at St. Francis, Kan., questioned her on the night of April 2. The next morning she entered an automobile at the edge of St. Francis. The license number was obtained and the car has been traced to a dealer at Kansas City, Kan. Officers there were to try to obtain more information today.

Another search of areas in and near Boulder cañon Thursday for clothing or other evidence was fruitless.

A Boulder dentist who X-rayed the victim's perfect teeth - except for one cavity which had not been filled - estimated her age at 19. Previous estimates placed the age between 17 and 20. The dentist suggested that the excellent condtion of the teeth indicated that girl had spent her childhood in a community whose water supply contains fluorides.

Sidebar: Hot Clue From Kansas is Eliminated from Case. Another of the "hot" leads faded out of the picture this afternoon. An officer at Julesburg, Colo. notified Sheriff Everson that a girl with the same name, address, and description as that of the hitchhiker seen at St. Francis, Kan. was in Julesburg on April 9. That was the day after the murder victim's body was found.
