April 18, 1954 Rocky Mountain News, Canon Slaying Clue Points to Byers Girl, by Ken Wayman
Arapahoe County sheriff officers Saturday were checking the possibility a 23-year-old Byers woman, missing since March 6, might be the unidentified girl found slain in Boulder Cañon.
Tom McDaniels, Arapahoe County undersheriff, said the woman's description tallied closely with that of a body found near Boulder April 8. But the girl's height and shoe size differed, he added.
He identified the missing Byers woman as Mrs. Marilyn Lancaster. He immediately notified Boulder Sheriff Art Everson.
MOVED TO BYERS
McDaniels said Mrs. Lancaster moved to Byers with her husband, Charles, and a brother, Charles Robbins, about 8 months ago.
A neighbor told McDaniels she had taken the woman to a bus depot in Strasburg and dropped her there. Mrs. Lancaster had told her she was going to Amarillo.
She left all her clothes, a dog, cat and parakeet in her Byers apartment.
Mrs. Lancaster was employed by A. R. Stringer, owner of the Stringer Solitaire Food Co.
Stringer told McDaniels he received a call from a man in Amarillo recently asking if Mrs. Lancaster had returned to Byers. Stringer became suspicious and notified the sheriff's office.
HUSBAND LEFT
McDaniels said the husband had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until just before Christmas then moved to Kit Carson where he was employed as an oil field worker. He returned to Byers two months ago then left for Philadelphia and has not been seen since.
The brother lived in Byers for several weeks. His whereabouts now is unknown.
The missing woman was described as about 5 feet 2 inches tall. She weighed between 100 and 105 pounds, had large or prominent teeth, shoulder-length reddish blond hair and wore shoe size 3 or 4.
The unidentified girl found in Boulder Cañon also had long reddish blond hair but was taller. Her shoe size was estimated at 6 or 7. The body was found April 8.
McDaniels said his investigation disclosed that the name of the man calling from Amarillo, Tex., was Hudspeth. But neighbors did not know his full name. They told him the woman was receiving an Air Force allotment check for $30 a month from the Texas man. She also used the names Marilyn Leonard and Marilyn Robbins, according to McDaniels.
Earlier Saturday Everson said that every clue in the mystery killing had "fizzled out".
He said he would confer with McDaniels Sunday about the missing Byers woman.
