April 19, 1954 Denver Post, Victim Clue Fizzles Out in Hunt for Killer of Strawberry Blond
The hunt for the killer of a young girl found battered to death west of Boulder was "at a standstill" Monday after hospital information from Philadelphia, Pa., established the victim could not have been a missing Byers, Colo. woman who was the latest "possible victim" in the baffling case.
A surgical operation was performed Oct. 25, 1952 on Mrs. Marilyn Lancaster, 21, the missing woman, officials at the Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia reported to the Denver Post by telephone.
On the basis of his autopsy findings, Dr. F.L. James, Boulder pathologist, said the surgery described by officials could not have been performed on the murder victim.
The only slender clue still left to Boulder Sheriff Art Everson was the still-missing Mary Jane Smith, a runaway Lenexa, Kan., girl who was last seen on April 3 at St. Francis, Kan. – apparently headed for Denver.
The missing Kansas girl's description closely matches that of the 5-foot 3, slender young strawberry blond whose nude and battered body was found April 8 on a Boulder canyon creek bank.
Officers said they still were not satisfied with the report that the missing Mary Jane Smith had checked into a Julesburg, Colo., hotel on April 9, the day after the murder discovery. A check of hotel registrations was ordered to establish definitely whether the Julesburg girl was the same one who spent the night of April 2 in St. Francis.
Meanwhile, contributions came by mail to the Denver Post from persons who said they wished to save the murder victim from an unmarked pauper's grave in Columbia Cemetery in Boulder.
One letter with an accompanying check for $12 was signed by 13 residents of the Jenik guest home, 1249 Fillmore St.
The signers told the Post: ...."It would be a darn shame when someone's daughter is to be buried in a pauper's grave... we decided we would try to do something about it. We are enclosing this check to start a fund for proper burial of this unfortunate girl."
At Boulder, Coroner George Howe said tentative plans will lcall for a Thursday burial for the young victim. He said it would take at least $175 for a grave and headstone for the girl.
