April 10, 1954 Rocky Mountain News, Boulder Provides For Girl's Funeral

The battered body of a teenage girl, her identity and the identity of her killer still a mystery, will be buried Thursday in Boulder's Columbia Cemetery.

The generosity of Boulder citizens has ruled out a pauper's grave for the victim, County Coroner George Howe said. Residents have contributed money to buy a plot and headstone in the cemetery, beneath whose sod rest a score of Colorado pioneers.

The Rev. Paul Fife of Boulder's Sacred Heart Church has volunteered to conduct the services, Howe said. No one knows what religion the girl followed.

"We can only do what we think is right," Howe explained.

Mrs. Margaret Haskall will play the organ at the services, which will begin at 2 p.m. in Howe Mortuary. The mortuary is donating its services and providing pallbearers from its staff, Howe said.

A crowd of curious is expected to turn out for the services. The casket will be closed.

Meanwhile, Boulder sheriff's officers admitted they had reached a seemingly impenetrable stone wall in their investigation of the macabre murder.

The girl was found in Boulder Canon, eight miles west of Boulder, on April 8. She had been stripped and brutally beaten, then hurled down the embankment to the edge of the creek.
