April 23, 1954 Boulder Daily Camera, Someone's Daughter: Unknown but not Forgotten
Unknown but not forgotten by her fellow men, a girl who met violent death at the hands of a murderer was buried in Boulder's Columbia cemetery Thursday afternoon. A clergyman's prayers committed her to "eternal rest."
Once destined for a pauper's grave, the young blonde instead was interred in a lot purchased through the contributions of people who felt that, whoever she was, she deserved more consideration to her memory.
"To Someone's Daughter" read the card on one of the eight floral pieces sent to the funeral of the unidentified girl whose nude body was found in Boulder canon April 8.
30 Attend Services
Thirty men and women attended the service in the Howe mortuary chapel and most of them went to the cemetery where Rev. Paul Fife, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, concluded:
"May she rest in peace. Amen."
Law enforcement officers kept watch for any sign of suspicion or recognition among the persons present. Sometimes killers have been caught when they showed up at the victim's funeral. Nothing like that happened here.
A small bronze marker at the grave reads: "Unknown Murdered April 1954." The temporary marker will be replaced later by a granite headstone donated by Victor J. Emmett, of the Boulder Marble and Granite Works.
Rites Non-Denominational
At the mortuary and at the graveside, Father Paul used part of the Catholic ritual but generally the rites were non-denomational. He served as any other Christian clergyman might have served, rather than in the formal role of a Catholic priest.
Father Paul made no reference to the manner of the death of the girl, about 19 years old, nor to the mystery of her identity.
He opened the service by reading the 130th Psalm": "Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord....There is forgiveness with thee....With the Lord there is mercy."
"Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her," the pastor said. "Grant remission of sins. Let her attain to everlasting rest and happiness."
Words of Jesus Read
At the graveside, Father Paul read the words of Jesus from the 11th chapter of St. John: "I am the ressurection and the life. He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." The Lord's Prayer and other invocations ended the short committal service.
Organ music played by Mrs. Margaret Hascall preceded the service at the mortuary. Howe's mortuary arranged for bearers of the casket- a finer one than is normally provided with the $100 which the county pays for pauper's burials.
Each of the three Boulder florists sent flowers. Four other pieces came from Boulder residents and one from a group of Louisville and Lafayette residents.
$95 Donated
Cash contributions to a fund handled by The Camera totaled $95. That covered the $60 cost of the cemetery lot and the $35 charge for opening and closing it.
The sheriff's office has checked out scores of leads without being able to establish the identity of the murder victim or any valid clue to the killer. The girl's extensively fractured body apparently was removed from an automobile and dumped over an embankment beside the Boulder canon highway just below the Boulder Falls parking area.
