April 28, 1954, Daily Camera, Youths Quizzed in Girl Slaying; Believe Cleared

Two teenage Denver youths have been turned over to the FBI in Cheyenne for prosecution on stolen car charges while local authorities continue to investigate the possibility they were involved in the slaying of a blonde girl near Boulder three weeks ago.

Police Chief Fred Schmoker, however, said it seemed "pretty sure" the boys were not involved in the slaying of the unidentified girl. They claim, he said to have been in Canada at the time of the murder.

All leads toward identifying the girl, whose nude and beaten body was found west of the college town in Boulder Canyon, have failed.

ADMIT CAR THEFT
Schmoker said the two 17-year-olds Elliot Shimley, and Peter V. Wasson have admitted taking the car and $150 from Harry Marcove of Denver. They said, Schmoker reported they knew Marcove would be out of town vacationing, and they took his car to California and into Canada.

They were returning the car to Denver, intending to leave it on a downtown street, Schmoker said, when they stopped in a Cheyenne garage to have the speedometer turned back 3,000 miles.

The garage attendant became suspicious when the boys would not give their names, and called police. They were immediately picked up for possession of a car listed as stolen March 14.

BLOOD STAINS FOUND
The Boulder slaying came into the questioning when police found blood stains in the rear seat, Schmoker said. He added the boys explained they resulted when a man they picked up in Canada cut himself opening a beer bottle.

Police also questioned them on the freshly painted floormat in the rear, but the youths' story that a garage where the car had been washed painted the mats as a regular service was checked out to be true.

Schmoker said the boys carried a total of $185 which they said they earned working for a seismograph crew in Canada.
