April 9, 1954 Denver Post, Finding of Girl's Body Horrifies C.U. Students, by Ed Olsen
Two 19-year-old University of Colorado student on a camera trip up Boulder Canyon Thursday evening found a picture of horror when they stumbled on the body of a 17-year-old girl.
The gruesome discovery of what Sheriff Art Everson of Boulder county said was definitely a murder victim was made by Wayne Swanson of Batavia, Ill., and James Andes of Mackinaw, Ill. The freshmen students room together at 1719 Marine St. in Boulder.
Thursday afternoon, they said they decided to drive to Boulder Falls eight miles west of the town up Boulder Creek. They had taken their last semester tests and were waiting for the start of spring vacation Saturday.
STROLLED BY THE CREEK
Andes took his camera and they left boulder about 4:45 p.m. heading up Boulder Canyon. When they reached the falls, they parked and strolled down to the creek south of the road.
"We walked down the creek, stepping on the stones," Andes said. "I picked up a few pieces of driftwood for a fire and we laid them along the bank, intending to come back for them later.
"I guess we went a quarter-mile down the creek. Then we climbed up on the road and started back."
The students said they were walking along the shoulder of the road, at that point about the width of a car, and watching for more driftwood.
Suddently they noticed what looked like a figure lying on the rocks at the bottom of the embankment.
STOPPED IN HORROR
"At first we thought it was a store window dummy," Andes said. "We didn't think it could possibly be a human body."
The boys scrambled down the bank and stopped in horror when they realized they were looking at the body of a girl. The body had been stripped and lay on its back, the teeth protruding in a grisly grin. It had been terribly ravaged by animals and the flesh was blackened and bruised. Strawberry blond hair fell in disarray from the head of the corpse.
"I don't know what we said - we just left in a hurry," Swanson said.
Andes and Swanson fled back up the bank to their car and drove to Boulder to report their find to the sheriff. At first, they said, they had difficulty convincing Everson they had actually found a body.
They they accompanied a group of officers, including Everson, Deputy Sheriff Ray [Wray] Andrews, Roy Hendricks of the Boulder police and Deputy District Attorney Joseph J. Dolan, back to the scene. |
