May 31, 1954 Daily Camera, Everson Awaits Arkansas Report on Girl Slaying
Sheriff Arthur T. Everson is awaiting a written report from authorities at Van Buren, Ark., on a man's statement that he killed the girl whose body was found in Boulder cañon on April 8.
Meanwhile Everson is regarding the purported confession with skepticism. It came from a former patient in a mental hospital who also related that he had found a second girl's body in his car and knew about the slaying of one or two others. Psychiatrists say it is a common occurrence for persons afflicted with a certain type of mental illness to "admit" crimes with which they had no connection.
Nevertheless the Boulder county sheriff gave Police Chief Vol Russell of Van Buren information on which to base further questioning of the pirsoner, who identified himself as Melvin C. Boyd. Russell said the man is a narcotics user.
The young blonde whose body was discovered beside Boulder creek has not been identified. Boyd said in Van Buren that she is Jeanette Harris, of Harrisburg, Pa. whom he once referred to as his wife. Boyd's story was that he killed her near Las Vegas, Nev., drove to Boulder and threw the body down an embankment of the Boulder cañon road.
Boyd also related, according to the Associated Press, that he found the blood-covered body of Virginia L. Gosbeck, of San Francisco, in his car near Mexicali, Mexico, earlier this year. He said he buried the body but it has not been found. San Francisco police said Virginia Gosbeck has not been listed as missing in their files.
