JANE DOE ARTICLES

May 9, 2004, Boulder Daily Camera, Reopen the Case and Find the Truth, by Alan Cass

I would like to respond to Silvia Pettem`s Boulder County History column, "Boulder Residents Still Care About Jane Doe" (April 22). Additionally, I would like to express my appreciation to those in our community who, once again, have come forward to support the effort to restore "Jane Doe`s" rightful name, return her to her family and perhaps find the perpetrator of her murder in April 1954.

I have followed this case for 50 years and as a resident of this community, I was most proud of our caring citizens then, who donated funds for her funeral, burial expenses and provided her with a temporary resting place within our community. Now, with the advent of modern scientific forensics, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle and his outstanding team of investigators have the challenge and, indeed, the obligation to seek her identity and, hopefully, name the person or persons who deprived her of her life.

This effort, led by Silvia Pettem, is not for any personal gain, promotion or notoriety on her part. Those of us who know Silvia, know she is a sincere, conscientious and honorable individual who wants to see this case reopened primarily so this unidentified young woman can finally be returned to her family and allow justice to be served.

Once again, we, as a caring community, have the opportunity and civic duty to honor and respect "Jane Doe`s" memory by being a part of this most worthwhile objective. Because of the significance of the 50th anniversary of her murder, this is our best opportunity to have this case resolved.

One is acutely aware of just how effective forensic science, the news media, and Internet communication is today. These modern technologies offer a potential to solve this perplexing mystery that was not available in 1954. Now is the time! Your contribution may help to return her to her family, to her home, and return her identity!
