June 16, 2004, Boulder Daily Camera, Gratitude: Many Hands Helped Exhume Jane Doe; Group Effort Pulled Jane Doe From Her Grave, by Silvia Pettem
The recent exhumation of the murder victim known as Jane Doe ("Investigators exhume the body of Jane Doe," news, June 9) brought together a group of truly compassionate people who deserve to be publicly thanked and recognized.
Sheriff Joe Pelle and members of the Boulder County Sheriff`s Office are to be commended for their dedication and commitment to the reopening of this 50-year-old case.
Michael Greenwood, general manager of Crist Mortuary, made the exhumation possible by generously donating his time, labor and equipment.
Local and out-of-town donors contributed funds, which were (and continue to be) collected by the Boulder Museum of History. Once Jane Doe`s genetic profile is obtained, these cash donations will pay for the DNA analyses of potential relatives in an attempt to restore the victim`s identity.
Aiding in the exhumation were three members of the Vidocq Society, a Philadelphia-based group of forensic experts who work behind the scenes as "crime solution catalysts." They work for free, and their goal for "our" Jane Doe case is to further justice that was denied to the woman in her tragically short life.
Sid Anderson, general manager of the Hotel Boulderado, graciously provided the out-of-town experts with complimentary hotel accommodations for the three days they were in Boulder. Thanks goes, too, to the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department (owner of Columbia Cemetery) for its assistance and cooperation.
