June 8, 2004, Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Press Release: Exhumation in the 1954 "Jane Doe" Homicide Case, by Lt. Phil West
Boulder County Sheriff’s detectives undertook the exhumation of the casket of “Jane Doe”, the unidentified victim of a 1954 homicide, from Boulder’s historic Columbia Cemetery on Tuesday morning, June 8. The disinterment was accomplished pursuant to a search warrant; detectives hope to obtain forensic evidence that will assist with the eventual identification of “Jane Doe” and potentially aid in identifying her killer(s).
The nude body of “Jane Doe”, a young, white female, estimated at being between 17 and 20 years of age, was discovered in Boulder Canyon, along the north bank of Boulder Creek, east of Boulder Falls on April 8th, 1954. The young woman had sustained multiple fractures and was evidently left for dead by her killer(s); she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and exposure. Despite extensive local and national publicity, “Jane Doe” was never identified. The citizens of Boulder, concerned that she not be relegated to a pauper’s grave, contributed to a fund, offsetting the costs of her funeral and eventual burial in Columbia Cemetery.
Similarly, in early 2004, a fund was established to support re-opening the investigation. Private contributions, both of money and in-kind services, have allowed the Sheriff’s Office to re-open the case at minimal public expense. For additional details, and donation information contact the “Jane Doe Fund” at the Boulder History Museum, 1206 Euclid Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302, Phone # 303-449-3464.
Further information regarding the status of the investigation will be provided in the future, however, pending a complete forensic examination, the Sheriff’s Office will make no further comment on the case at the moment.
