JANE DOE ARTICLES

November 4, 2005, People Magazine, The Grave Within (only the sidebar on "Cold Trail in a Canyon" has been transcribed below)

The body of the young woman was found 51 years ago in a canyon near Boulder, Colo. All that investigators could conclude at the time was that she was about 20 years old and had apparently been beaten to death. The trail to her identity quickly went cold.

Then, ten years ago, Silvia Pettem, a local historian in Boulder who had two daughters about the same age as the victim, heard about the case, got interested, and helped raise more than $3,000 to have the body exhumed for DNA testing.

Last year the sheriff's department reopened the investigation. The hope is that someone will recognize the facial reconstruction as a friend or relative.

"We know how she ended up," says Det. Steve Ainsworth. "If we can figure out who she is, we can start at that end and hopefully meet in the middle to find out what did happen to her."
